- Story Text: For the first time in nearly two weeks large numbers
of refugees have been able to cross the border in and out of
Chechnya.Russian Emergencies Minister Sergei Shoigu, sent by
Prime Minister Putin to deal with the refugee crisis, has said
exit routes would be set up in Chechnya.
Large groups of refugees were able to cross in and
out of Chechnya on Thursday (November 4) after being held at
the border for nearly two weeks.Russian officials said they
hope to clear off the backlog of thousands of refugees within
a day.
Emergencies Minister Sergei Shoigu, who was sent to
Ingushetia by the Prime Minister Vladimir Putin to help deal
with the humanitarian calamities, has said that accomodation
for another ten thousand refugees will be shortly prepared in
Ingushetia. He also claimed that new exit routes for refugees
will be set up in Chechnya.
The clogged checkpoint, separating Chechnya from
neigbouring Ingushetia, has generated strong Western criticism
of Russia's military campaign and the ensuing human suffering.
The United Nations and The Organisation for Security and
Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) have sent their representatives
to Ingushetia to inspect the situation on the border with
Chechnya.
Meanwhile Russian forces, six weeks after the start of
their military advance in the breakaway region, advanced
through villages west of the regional capital Grozny and
nearly sealed off the second city Gudermes.
Defence Minister Igor Sergeev said on Tuesday that Russian
troops planned to take eventual control of the entire
separatist region.
