- Story Text: Thousands of refugees have returnd to the Timorese
capital Dili after weeks in hiding.
Thousands of pro-indpendence refugees are continuing
to return to the capital Dili, as the UN force slowly restores
stability to the burnt out city.
Hundreds of thousands of refugees are believed to have
fled to the hilly interior of East Timor, surviving on local
plants and small animals for food.
Although the UN has found few cases of starvation, most
are without clean water, shelter or medical facilities, and
are feared to be at risk when the rainy season begins in October.
Reuniting families will also rpove to be difficult,
after reports that thousands were forcibly sent to West Timor
by Indonesian backed pro-Jakarta militias.
"My house is destroyed by Militias and I dont know about
my parents, where they are right now", said one refugee making
his way back to the capital Dili.
