- Story Text: The Macedonian government said on Sunday (March 28)
close
to 15,000 refugees had now arrived in the country and
financial and humanitarian aid was being sent from various
countries to help with the load.
The government played down rumours of Macedonian air s
pace being used for NATO air strikes saying any NATO planes
flying over head were only for security reasons.
Refugees came in carloads and on foot across the border
telling of stories of houses near the border being burned by
Serb soldiers.
Kosovo Albanian refugees continue to arrive in
Macedonia from various regions in Kosovo following days of
air
strikes on Yugoslavia.
Refugees tell stories of destruction by Serbian forces in
villages not far from the border.
Vice President Radmill a Kiprianova said the total
registration number is around 14,000 but local refugee
agencies quote the number as being much higher.In the last
days since strikes began a number of refugees have been
crossing into this neighbouring country escaping attacks from
Serbian army.
On Saturday Serb authorities burned villages along the
two countries borders, dangerously close to Macedonian
territory.
The government also dispelled rumours that NATO was using
Macedonian airspace for planes invovled in air strikes in
Yugoslavia.Kiprianova said that NATO planes flying over
Macedonia were there for security reasons.
