- Story Text: Thousands of refugees at a unique camp in Kenya are
preparing to celebrate the new millennium with a united voice
for peace.
The refugees from the majority Sudanese tribes will
celebrate with traditional song and dance. The Kakuma camp in
northern Kenya now has a mix of Rwandese, Burundi, Ugandan,
Ethiopian, Eritrean, Somali and Congolese refugees, all of
whom have fled war and ethnic clashes in their countries.
Many are praying the new millennium will bring peace and
unity in their troubled countries.
However, not everyone is celebrating.Ethiopian refugees
will have another eight years to wait as they live by a
different calender where January is in December and the New
Year starts in September.
But that won't stop United Nations and other aid workers
joining in the party, although the head of the Kakuma
sub-office, Saber Azam, warns if things get out of hand they
could end up in either hospital or the police station.
Kakuma camp 100 kilometers South from the Kenya-Sudan
border was established in 1992 and boasts the widest variety
of refugees to be found in any camp in the world.
The camp, initially set-up for un-accompanied minors
fleeing forced recruitment by the warring factions in Southern
Sudan, is now the melting pot of more than ten different
nationalities from the troubled great lakes region.
