- Story Text: SABRA, CHATILLA AND BOURJ EL BRAJNEH CAMPS, NEAR BEIRUT, LEBANON
Tension in the Sabra, Chatilla and Bourj el Brajneh refugee camps near Beirut remained high on July 3 following clashes between rival Moslem and Christian factions. Shi'ite Amal militia forces operated checkpoints in and out of the camps, stopping motorists and searching cars. Nine people were killed and 30 wounded throughout Beirut overnight from July 2 in the heaviest fighting for three weeks. Shells crashed into residential sections of the city and gunfire echoed through the streets. Reuter reported the violence erupted without explanation after the Lebanese Forces. Christian militia announced qualified acceptance of a government plan under which the army was to take over responsibility for security for greater Beirut on July 3. Most of the overnight casualties were in Beirut's heavily-populated Shi-ite suburbs.
