- Story Text: Refugees fleeing the conflict in Kosovo have continued
daily life in the sprawling makeshift Stankovic camp inside
Macedonia. Some have been given the option of flying to
Germany the possible start of an uncertain new life, not
knowing if they will ever return to the Serbian province of
Kosovo.
Aid has arrived in the form of food and clothes, and
for some children the chores of normal life such as brushing
teeth continue.
British engineers at the Stankovic refugee camp have built
a water purification system to provide fresh water to some
25,000 Kosovo refugees.
It took the engineers a week to build it.Sergeant Paul
Kerridge of the British Army's 21st Engineer Unit said they
needed to lay down one and a half km of piping and that the
purifier will provide 350,000 litres of water a day.
Kerridge said water is a priority for them and the
refugees to avoid the spread of disease.
"Producing about 360,000 litres of water per day from raw
water, putting it through chlorination system so that it is
now drinkable and there is about a (kilometre) and a half of
distribution pipe running around the camp so the refugees can
now get drinking water, can use it for washing.Because
sanitation is very important as you can imagine with 25,000
people here," he said.
