  • Story Text: Hundreds of Chechen refugees, eager to go back home,
    have spent several nights at the border between Chechnya and
    Ingushetia waiting for the checkpoint to open.

    Adler-20 checkpoint at the Chechen-Ingush border was
    packed with refugees in the early hours on Thursday (March
    30).Women, children and elderly people were waiting in buses
    and cars for the border to open.All of them want to go back
    to their homes in Chechnya.

    Most of the refugees fled war-torn Chechnya six months ago
    but are now willing to return to the rebel region.

    The border between Ingushetia and Chechnya was closed for
    several days during the presidential elections.

    Russian troops suspended the influx of refugees back into
    Chechnya fearing provocation on the part of the rebels and the
    disruption of the election campaign.

    Russian officials have said more than 3,000 rebels remain
    in the region, with more than 2,000 holed up in the southern
    mountains.

    Russian troops control most of Chechnya, but fierce
    battles have broken out in the mountains and villages at the
    mouth of gorges which lead into the hills.
