- Story Text: The flow of refugees into Macedonia is unceasing, as
humanitarian relief agencies attempt to step up the pace of
resettlement to other European countries before the camps'
infrastructures collapse due to pressure of numbers.
The refugees continued to trickle over the border into
Macedonia on Monday morning (April 26) to the alarm of
humanitarian relief agencies working in the area.
According to some agency representatives the camps are now
holding three times the capacity they were initially designed
to do, putting immense pressure on the infrastructure of the camps.
At Stankovic camp bus shuttles for Europe are leaving
daily but the agencies say the pace of resettlement is too
slow.On Monday a few bus loads left with refugees bound for
France and Norway but no sooner do fifty refugees leave on one
coach, than another hundred arrive over the border
U.S.movie star Richard Gere will go to Macedonia this
week to visit ethnic Albanian refugees from Kosovo on a
morale-boosting mission, the daily Vecir reported on Monday.
Quoting an assistant to Gere in New York, the paper said
the Hollywood human rights activist would meet Macedonian
government representatives, humanitarian officials and tour
the refugee camps on Wednesday.
Gere, a Buddhist, campaigns actively for human rights in
Tibet. On the screen he is well known for his roles in "An
Officer and a Gentleman" and "Pretty Woman".
