- Story Text: Refugees are again crossing the Macedonia-Yugoslavia
border after a lull of several days. The refugees told UNHCR
workers they had to leave Kosovo because they were no longer
allowed to buy food there.
Several hundred Kosovo refugees started crossing into
Macedonia on Saturday (May 15), the biggest group in the last
10 days, aid workers said.
The first batch of about 50 people was escorted by
Macedonian police into the Blace holding camp immediately
across the frontier.
Reporters were prevented from speaking to the new
arrivals. However one man managed to say they had come by train.
It was not immediately clear if the arrivals marked a
full-scale resumption of deportations from the Serbian
province of Kosovo or were simply an isolated group which
managed to sneak over the mountains to safety.
Hundreds of thousands of Kosovo's ethnic Albanians have
trudged in appalling weather into neighbouring Macedonia,
Albania and Yugoslav federal partner Montenegro, filling
refugee camps to bursting point.
Many deportees have brought with them first-hand reports
of massacres, systematic rape and beatings as part of a
deliberate campaign of so-called ethnic cleansing by Serb
paramilitary troops and special police.
