- Story Text: Several countries hosting Palestinian refugees met in Amman on Sunday (5 August) for an annual meeting to discuss refugees problems.
SYNOPSIS: Representatives from Jordan, Syria, Sudan, Lebanon, the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO), and the Arab League gathered at the Jordanian Ministry of Construction and Development for their annual meetings. A conspicuous absentee was Egypt, though that country is likely to be one of the main topics of this year's meeting. Some committee members have been calling for Egypt's suspension from the group since it is considered to have betrayed the Palestinian cause by signing the peace treaty with Israel. Egypt has already been suspended from the Arab League and the League's offices have been moved to Tunisia.
The meeting is expected to cover a wide range of topics -- from military service for Palestinians service for Palestinians holding dual nationality, to budget problems, to the latest Israeli raids against Palestinian camps in Lebanon. Palestinians in Lebanon are coming under increasing pressure to move to less populated areas, but they are naturally reluctant to do so, as this would make them even more susceptible to Israeli raids.
