- Story Text: A Danish freighter with 4,420 Vietnamese refugees on board steamed into Hong Kong on Sunday (4 May).
The refugees, many of them reported to be soldiers of the defeated South Vietnamese Army (ARVN), fled Saigon shortly after the capital fell to the forces of the Provisional Revolutionary Government (PRG) on April 30th.
They were picked up from a sinking vessel by the Danish Maersk cargo-liner, Clara Maersk, about 100 miles south of Saigon in international waters. Five Hong Kong government departments joined forces in the operation, described as the largest relief operation in Hong Kong for 22 years.
The refugees, classified by the Hong Kong government as victims of a sea disaster, will be cared for on humanitarian grounds. All of them will be temporarily housed in military company in the British Colony.
