- Story Text: Near Mercara, in the Indian State of Mysore, a new village is being built to provide a home for about 3,000 Tibetan refugees. Although the present settlement consists mainly of tents and shacks work is well underway on the construction of schools, shops and houses. The task of building the village is in the hands of the Mysore Government.
The refugees will be given work in the fields, growing tobacco and grain. Some are already at work - using more modern farm methods than they ever did in their own country. Others will be able to work at their trades providing articles and goods for the rest of the village.
In the schools children are taught general subjects including English. Special classes give instruction on farming and trades. After school the boys and girls move into the fields to help with the crops.
India's Premier Nehru announced in Parliament, Nov 25, that funds would be provided to help the State Government in their task to help settle the refugees. He said that since March 1959, until October 1960, about 24,400 refugees had crossed from Tibet into India.
