- Story Text: Chechen refugees have scuffled with Russian police
at a central refugee crossing point along the Chechen-Ingush
border.
Over 200,000 Chechen refugees have poured out of
Chechnya since Russia's military campaign started four months
ago.
During that time, distrust between the Russian authorities
in the region and the refugees has remained high.
Chechen drivers going across the border on Thursday
(Januuary 20) complained that they were being forced to pay
bribes.
"I don't object to the checks and all, but they come up to
you, name a price and you have to pay," said one refugee.
In addition to war tensions, the refugees have complained
of inadequate treatment in refugee camps and detentions of
Chechen men.
Russian authorities have said that Chechen guerrilla
fighters often pose as refugees to smuggle weapons and
supplies for the fighters and thus demand that they be
thoroughly searched and sometimes detained.
