- Story Text: South Vietnam has begun resettling Montagnard tribesmen who live in the Central Highlands along the Khmer Republic border. This follows military operations in the area - where a big Communist build-up has been reported - and the Saigon forces say they cannot guarantee protection for the Montagnards.
The displaced settlers have been given a choice of living elsewhere in South Vietnam or going to the Khmer Republic. The first batch of those who opted for a new life in the Khmer Republic arrived aboard a military aircraft at Phnom Penh airport this week.
Many gave lived in the Khmer Republic before without realising it as the border means little to them. However, the Khmer authorities have no representation in the three north-eastern provinces along the border which are monthly Communist dominated.
The Montagnards will live at a refugee camp just outside Phnom Penh for the time being to await a new home in the hills. But a new home is the big problem - for all the mountain areas in the Khmer Republic now are either controlled by the Communists or have been abandoned by the government forces.
