SYNOPSIS: Delegates from ten African states met Monday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia for a four-day conference of the refugee committee of the Organisation for African Unity. Formed in 1967, the committee was to discuss problems of employment and education for African refugees.
The conference was opened by E.T. Turckim, the Ghanaian Ambassador. The conference was to consider a report from the co-ordinating committee on placement and education of African refugees. It urged members of OAU to create employment opportunities, vocational training schemes and scholarships for refugees.
Nzo Ekangaki of Cameroon, the OAU Secretary-General, said such a programme was meant to improve refugees' lives but also to pave the way for eventual repatriation. Delegates represented Zaire, Uganda, Sudan, Tanzania, Nigeria, Ghana, Rwanda, Burundi, Cameroon and Senegal.
