- Story Text: A group of 48 members of the United Church of Canada visited a Jordanian refugee camp on Sunday (18 February). The Christians are touring the Middle East to observe for themselves the current crisis, with particular emphasis on the Palestinian issue.
They hope to arouse more interest among their colleagues in Canada. They also hope to arrange regular visits of Canadian Christians to the area. The group is spending nearly three weeks on its tour, and the itinerary includes Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Cyprus, Switzerland and the Vatican.
The United Church of Canada has more than 3,500,000 members who annually contribute 100,000,000 Canadian dollars (42 million pounds Sterling) for refugees and poor people through the Near East Christian Council.
Before their visit to the Al-Baqa's refugee camp, the group met a party of local religious leaders. They includes Bishop Nimeh Sama'an (Roman Catholic) Shaikh Abdallah Ghoseh (the Kadi Al-Kuda of Islam), Mr. Rawhi Al-Khatib (representing Arabs in Jerusalem), and Mr. Ali Dajani, director of Jordan's Industrial Chamber. Those leaders took part in a discussion about the current situation, including Israeli control of Jerusalem.
