- Story Text: Thousands of refugees from Serb Krajina continued to crowd the main Bosnian northwestern road on Tuesday (August 8) as they waited to enter Yugoslavia at the Sremska Raca border crossing point.
The refugees, mainly women with children and elderly people, travelled in tractors, trucks, buses and cars. They slept wherever they could: in their vehicles, in tents or on the bare ground.
On Monday a woman refugee gave birth while waiting to cross the border.
The woman, who would not give her name, said she had waited for fifteen years to become pregnant only to give birth in a car, waiting with other refugees to enter Yugoslavia.
The refugees were given aid packages from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees as they neared the border. There were rudimentary washing facilities provided.
Many of the refugees fled from advancing Croat forces in Krajina at short notice. They had abandoned most of their possessions and were short of food, water and supplies.
