- Story Text: More than 400 Tibetan refugees staged a demonstration in the Indian capital New Delhi on Friday (March 10) and demanded an end to Chinese occupation of their country.
The demonstration was held to commemorate the 36th anniversary of the Tibetan National Uprising Day against the occupation of Tibet by China in 1959.
The protesters accused China of systematic repression and human rights violations in Tibet. They claimed that more than six million people in Tibet were being harassed and subjected to discrimination.
The Beijing government had organised an unprecedented migration of Chinese people into Tibet to change the demographic balance of the country, they said.
Shouting slogans and marching through the streets of the Indian capital, the Tibetans called for international intervention to end the Chinese invasion of their country.
The protesters, who included a large number of women and school children, sang the Tibetan national anthem and Buddhist hymns as they burnt the Chinese flag at the annual rally.
They hailed the efforts of their spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, in mobilising world opinion for the liberation of Tibet.
The demonstration was organised by members of the Tibetan Women's Association, the Regional Tibetan Youth Congress, the Regional Tibetan Assembly and the Tibetan Freedom Movement.
