- Story Text: Tens of thousands of Iraqi Kurds have been displaced from Northern Iraq following the fighting beteen Saddam Husein's forces his supporters in the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP)and their opponents in the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Iran has asked the United Nations for aid for the refugees it is sheltering in six border camps in its Western provinces. It has said that there will be a serious crisis if such aid does not arrive in time.
A UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has said that an inspection team had so far found about 40 thousand refugees in camps on the Iranian side of the border.
These refugees have been admitted to Iran on a temporary basis and would have to return to Iraq if the situation became relatively and safe say the Iranian authorities About thirty thousand refugees have been given shelter in the Siranbad region,in the vicinity of the town of Baneh where the Iranian authorities are distributing aid among them. The Red Crescent society is also playing its part in helping the refugees, many of whom were working for non-governmental organisations (NGOS) and refugee agencies in Kurdistan and have fled to Turkey and Iran in fear of Saddam Hussein Many refugees have decided to return to the former PUK stronghold of Sulaimaniya despite reports of summary execution of PUK leaders there.
The KDP is now in virtual control of most of Northern Iraq after routing its rivals in the PUK in less than two weeks of fighting.
