- Story Text: A steady stream of Chechen refugees fleeing the fighting around Grozny are arriving in the neighbouring republic of Ingushetia.
For most people their first stop is a temporary shelter in a school or municipal building before staying with Ingush residents who try to care for them as best they can.
In the village of Malgobek, near the Chechen-Ingush border, nearly every household is sheltering refugees. At the boarding school two families are waiting to find accommodation locally.
The local hospital at Malgobek is caring for people wounded in the fighting in Grozny.
One of the refugees told how the Russian forces were using barbaric methods to bomb the Chechens, including shrapnel bombs.
Another described how planes suddenly appeared and bombed his home.
The Russian government press centre in Moscow on Sunday (December 31) said the refugees would be able to return home in five or six days, once the last pockets of resistance had been wiped out
