  • Story Text: For days, Syrian families have been gathering at bus stations in Damascus, preparing for the trek back to their homes in the Golan Heights. The mass movement of Syrian refugees began on 1 June -- the day after the signing of the disengagement agreement in Geneva. The pact provides for withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Golan battle zone, which was battered during daily clashes between Syrian and Israeli forces.

    It's estimated that more than 150,000 Syrians who fled their homes during the 1967 war and the latest conflict, which began last October, are preparing to return to Kuneitra and other towns on the Heights.

    The bus stations have been packed with jubilant refugees, some of whom showed their enthusiasm by dancing in the street. Thefamilies carried with them all their belongings - and in some cases these included beds and matresses.

    With the trek home under way, the Syrian Government newspaper Al-Thawra said in an editorial that the Arabs could be proud of what Syria had achieved in the Golan front battles and through its resistance to external pressure.
