- Story Text: Rwandan refugees in the Zairean border town of Goma are facing a new misery in addition to disease and starvation -- the rainy season.
Aid workers fear the the worst following warnings of torrential rains for the next four months.
On Thursday, (September 8), sheets of rain poured down upon the 300,000 refugees in the Kibumba camp who tried to find shelter in makeshift tents and under pieces of plastic.
Despite the rain, some trudged through mud searching for firewood to light fires.
Kibumba's residents live crowded together in shacks made of branches, straw and plastic. The camp is permanently shrouded in smoke from tens of thousands of cooking fires.
"These rains are likely to to continue for the next four months," said France Hautubise, press officer for the International Federation of the Red Cross.
"We cannot imagine what will happen to the 300,000 refugees stranded in Kibumba camp.' About 850,000 Hutu Rwandan refugees who fled the civil war in Rwanda are stranded in Goma.
The refugees say they cannot go home because they will be killed by the Tutsi-dominated Rwanda Patriotic Front, in revenge for Hutu massacres of Tutsis.
