- Story Text: Palestinian refugees in a south Lebanon camp say
they want a new Palestinian president who guarantees the
right of return.
On the eve of the Palestinian presidential
elections, refugees in Lebanon's Ain el-Hilweh Palestinian
camp said that they all support the Palestinian elections
and they wish they were able to participate in the poll and
stressed that the elections should be transparent.
Most of the Ain el-Hilweh residents said they will
support the new president as long as he protects the rights
of Palestinians, especially their right to return to their
homelands.
An estimated 360,000 Palestinian refugees live across
12 squalid camps all over Lebanon since they fled their
homeland at the start of the Arab-Israeli conflict.
PLO official Khaled Aref stressed that the popular
support for Fateh will lead Abu Mazen to be elected as
Arafat's successor.
"If we want to speak about popular balance of power for
this candidate or the other we are sure that Abu Mazen will
win and that he'll not have less than 70% of votes because
of popular support that Fateh has."
Palestinians will go to the polls on Sunday 9 January
to elect a successor to late Palestinian leader Yasser
Arafat with Israeli promises to ease restrictions in the
Palestinian territories on the eve of Sunday's landmark presidential
election.
Seven candidates are contesting the Palestinian
presidential elections but interim leader and Fatah
candidate Mahmoud Abbas is widely tipped to win the
upcoming election. He is viewed by both Israel and the U.S.
as a potential partner in a revived peace process
