- Story Text: Palestinian refugees living in camps near the Lebanese
capital have reacted angrily to the Mideast peace summit
proceeding without Palestinian President Yasser Arafat.
Hundreds of Palestinian refugees in south Lebanon
demonstrated in their camps on Wednesday (March 27) over the
absence of President Yasser Arafat and other Arab heads of
states (March 27, 2002) at the Arab summit in Beirut.
The Hasanen family watched the summit on television in
their home at the Sabra-Shatila Camp near Beirut. Karimah
Hasanen sits with the photograph of Arafat above her on the
wall but she is unhappy with the Arab peace summit continuing
without him.
"Arafat's absence is shame, shame, shame to the Arab
leaders," she said. Elsewhere in the camp an old woman holds
her own protest, "They are crooks from the days of prophet
Mohammed and Jesus Christ." she says.
And her dismay is echoed in other camps across the country.
The Palestinian Authority said President Yasser Arafat
would stay "with his people to face the Israeli aggression"
and avoid giving the Israeli government an opportunity to
prevent him from returning to the Palestinian territories.
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon had already
effectively ruled out Arafat's participation despite heavy
U.S. and other international pressure, saying that the
"conditions are not ripe" for him to go Beirut.
Apart from Arafat, other absentees include Egyptian
President Hosni Mubarak, King Abdullah of Jordan and mavericks
Muammar Gaddafi of Libya and Saddam Hussein of Iraq, along
with a clutch of Gulf emirs.
