- Story Text: Thousands of Palestinian refugees at Ain al-Hilweh camp
in south Lebanon have celebrated following the news about the
suicide bombing in Jerusalem which killed at least 18 Israelis
and wounded about 90 others.
Gunmen at Ain al-Hilweh camp fired rifles in the air,
as women and children applauded after the news about the
bombing in a crowded Jerusalem pizzeria on Thursday (August
9). Cars blocked the streets and people waved Palestinian
flags and hooted car horns.
Ain al-Hilweh is the largest of 12 Palestinian refugee
camps in Lebanon with an estimated population of 60,000.
At least 360,000 Palestinian refugees have lived in
Lebanon since being forced from their homes during various
Arab-Israeli conflicts.
The suicide bombing was the worst blast in Jerusalem since
the Palestinian revolt began more than 10 months ago.
Bodies were left strewn over the pavement. One woman,
blood spattering her face and arms, watched the ambulance
workers in shock as she dabbed herself with a cloth.
Using tweezers, ultra-Orthodox body collectors picked
human flesh off two baby carriages sitting on the pavement
outside the pizza restaurant, which was shattered by the
explosion.
Both Islamic Jihad and Hamas claimed responsibility for
the attack.
It was the deadliest attack since a suicide bomber killed
21 people at a Tel Aviv disco on June 1 and both sides
accepted a U.S.-brokered ceasefire, which has failed to end
the fighting.
