- Story Text: Refugees on Afghanistan's dusty border with Pakistan
faced security checks as they crossed back and forth between
the two countries.
Security was tight on Thursday (December 13) on both
sides of Afghanistan's border with Pakistan. The border
crossing is flooded with Afghanis who fled a U.S.-backed war
against the ruling Taliban regime in their home country. Some
are now returning home.
But all face stringent security checks by Pakistani
authorities.
Two men were led away by Pakistani authorities on Thursday
for unknown reasons. One was later pushed to the ground.
Fighters on the Afghan side of the border at Spin Boldak
loyal to warlord Gul Agha patrolled the streets.
Some road around in jeeps, armed to the teeth with rocket
propelled grenades and machine guns. Others stood guard on
strategic buildings in the town.
Kandahar, the spiritual home of the Taliban, fell to an
alliance of Afghan forces backed by the United States earlier
this month. It was the Taliban's last urban stronghold and
its fall has thrown Afghan's southern province into disarray
with warlords jockeying for control.
