- Story Text: Hundreds of Palestinians from Yarmouk refugee camp
march in streets to condemn the assassination of Hamas
leader Abdel Aziz al-Rantissi.
The assassination of top Hamas leader Abdel Aziz
al-Rantissi prompted a massive outburst of rage and grief
in Palestinian camps in Arab countries on Sunday (April
18), one of which was Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp in
Syria, near the capital Damascus.
A day after Rantissi's death, hundreds of demonstrators
from the camp rallied in the camp streets following the
Islamic noon prayers, to condemn Israel's assassination of
Rantissi.
"Retaliation, in God's will, will be shattering and
strong, and will be unavoidable. The Qassam Brigade have
promised that their retaliation will be strong and
shattering and destructive to this entity until they
(Israelis) start repenting for their crime," said Hamas
Popular Front representative Nawwaf Tikrini.
Carrying flags and banners to express their anger,
protesters also burned the Israeli flag and chanted
"Intifadah continues!"
An Israeli helicopter missile strike killed Rantissi
with two of his bodyguards in an attack on his car in Gaza
on Saturday night (April 17).
Rantissi, an Egyptian-trained paediatrician, was
outspoken in his support of violence. Israel branded him "a
mastermind of terrorism". He died when two missiles slammed
into his car hours after a suicide bomber killed an Israeli
soldier at northern Gaza's Erez crossing.
