- Story Text: Hundreds of Palestinian refugees demonstrate after
the killing of Hamas leader, Ismail Abu Shanab.
Hundreds of angry Palestinian refugees and Hamas
supporters marched in rallies following afternoon prayer on
Friday (August 22) in a massive show of strength. The
demonstrators, in the Ain El Helwe camp, Lebanon, burnt
American and Israeli flags in protest at the death of a top
Hamas official.
A prominent Hamas leader, Ismail Abu Shanab, and two
of his bodyguards were killed in an Israeli missile attack
in Gaza on Thursday (August 21). Fifteen bystanders were
also wounded in the strike.
Israel decided to return to tough military action in
response to a suicide bombing in Jerusalem on Tuesday
(August 19), which killed 20 people.
Hamas claimed responsibility for the bus bombing and
has since declared a seven-week cease-fire in Israel dead.
