American civil rights activist the Reverend Jesse
Jackson visited the troubled region of Darfur on Friday
(August 27). The former U.S. presidential candidate is in
Sudan to increase international pressure on the Sudanese
government and African rebels to end their 18-month
conflict that has killed nearly 50,000 people and driven
more than a million more from their homes.
He planned to tour the Abu Shouk camp on the outskirts
of Al-Fasher, which is home to more than 43,000 displaced
people. His visit came three days before a U.N. deadline
for the Sudanese government to disarm Arab militiamen
blamed for the Darfur violence or face possible sanctions.
