- Story Text: UN estimate up to 200,000 people have arrived in
Chad to escape violence in neighbouring Darfur.
An estimated 200-300 new refugees have arrived in
Kounounko Camp where 11,500 refugees have already settled
after fleeing the violence in Sudan's Western region of
Darfur.
The United Nations called on Friday for a further $86
million in donations this year to help Chad deal with the
flow of refugees from neighbouring Darfur.
Most of the money would be earmarked for the UNHCR, the
U.N. refugee agency, which is responsible for the estimated
200,000 people who have already crossed the 600-km
(370-mile) border to escape violence in the vast western
Sudan region.
The full amount of the appeal is $166 million, up from
the $54 million initially sought, but about $80 million has
already been provided or pledged, the U.N.'s Office for the
Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said.
More than a million Darfuris have fled their homes in
the past 18 months for fear of attack by camel-riding Arab
militia mobilised by the Sudanese government as auxiliaries
in a campaign to crush rebels.
Khartoum says the attacks on Darfuris were carried out
by "outlaws" and it is not responsible for their actions.
