- Story Text: Syria has set up a refugee camp at its border with Iraq
to receive Iraqi and foreign refugees fleeing from the war.
The Syrian Arab Red Crescent began setting up a refugee
camp at the Syrian-Iraqi border on Friday (March 28, 2003). The
Red Crescent organizations of Turkey and Iran are also taking part
in the project.
Officials have revealed that, so far, 200 tents,
accommodating four persons per tent, have been erected to
receive refugees from across the border.
Officials are planning to erect 1,000 tents in the refugee
camp. The Syrian officials in charge of the operation have
revealed that they also plan to connect electricity and water
to the camp.
There have been no Iraqi families received so far into the
camp. However, officials are taking all the precautionary
measures to receive any refugees that may cross the border as
the US-Led war on Iraq continues.
