- Story Text: Thousands of Palestinian refugees in the Baqaa camp in
Jordan have staged a rally in show of their support for the
ongoing Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation.
In the Baqaa camp north of the capital Amman, some
1,500 Palestinian refugees and Jordanian Islamists marched
after Muslim Friday (March 8) prayers in support of
Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza.
Jordan, which signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1994,
is home to more than 1.6 million Palestinian refugees and most
of its five million people have close ties to kin in the West
Bank.
Many of the protesters held anit-Israel banners and called
for Arab leaders to reject any peace deal with the Israelis.
"We can't accept any peace proposal which will offer
salvation for Sharon," said Bdel Majeed Thunaibat, chief of
the Muslim Brothers in Jordan.
Jordan has welcomed U.S. President George W. Bush's
decision to send Middle East envoy Anthony Zinni on a new
mission, saying on Friday that it was a first step to ending
Israeli-Palestinian violence.
Foreign Minister Marwan al-Muasher said who flew to Cairo
for a meeting of Arab foreign ministers, said the proposed
Saudi peace plan would top the agenda of the ministers'
weekend meeting.
The Saudi plan offers Arab recognition of Israel in return
for its withdrawal from land seized in the 1967 war. Arab
leaders will discuss it at a Beirut summit on March 27 and 28.
