  • Story Text: The invasion by Saigon government forces of Cambodia has started a new flow of Vietnamese refugees. South Vietnamese army trucks, used for taking supplies in, are returning across the border with the refugees.

    Yesterday (Sunday) about 300 refugees crossed into Tay Ninh Province to begin a new life. Many of them are relatives of Vietcong guerillas who stayed behind to fight the massive American and South Vietnamese force which struck across the border in a drive to destroy Communist bases in South-East Cambodia.

    The refugees were allowed to bring only a few possessions-including pets and livestock. Many of them had stomach ailments and others were racked by disease. South Vietnamese nurses treated them on arrival.

    All the refugees come from Chipou and Bau Chuc in the Cambodian are known in military terms as the Fish Hook. Until a few days ago, the villages were under Communist control. When the invading forces rolled across the border, the Vietcong guerillas fled into the jungle, leaving their families behind.

    Now, while pondering the fate of their fathers, husbands, brothers and sons, they are being temporarily housed in tents while awaiting more permanent accommodation in their new surroundings.
