- Story Text: European Parliament Turkey Rapporteur Ria Oomen-Ruijten visited a number of Syrian refugee camps in south-eastern Turkey on Saturday (January 12).
A young girl handed Oomen-Ruijten flowers and she in turn handed out gifts to a number of young children at the camps.
Turkey hosts more than 150,000 Syrians in refugee camps and tens of thousands of unregistered Syrians are also living in Turkish border towns and villages according to officials.
"We can't compare the situation of refugee camps and this is very good, but you are in a refugee camp you want to be at home. All those people here with their children, they want to be at home. They want to have a safe life. And that is the big problem. And there we need a solution," Oomen-Ruitjen told journalists as she visited the camps.
More than 60,000 Syrians have been killed in a revolt against four decades of Assad family rule, a conflict that began with peaceful protests but which has descended into civil war.
Syria's civil war is the longest and deadliest conflict to emerge from uprisings that began sweeping the Arab world in 2011 and has developed a significant sectarian element.
Rebels, mostly from the Sunni Muslim majority, confront Assad's army and security forces, dominated by his Shi'ite-derived Alawite sect, which, along with some other minorities, fear revenge if he falls. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
