Refugees fleeing heavy artillery fire in Beirut continued to head for the south of Lebanon on Wednesday. Up to 500 people per day pass into Israel's self-declared 'security zone' which stretches nine to 16 kilometres into southern Lebanon and is controlled by the Israeli-backed South Lebanon Army.
Ninety per cent of the refugees are Moslems. The remainder are Christians who have chosen not to escape from Beirut by ship because of the danger of artillery fire from Syrian and Moslem forces and the long queues of at least 3,000 Christians already waiting to leave by boat.
Most of the refugees travel to the edge of the 'security zone' by car, but have to leave their vehicles at the frontier before walking across, carrying as many of their personal belongings as they can. Some have been wounded in the recent battles between Christian troops under the command of General Michel Aoun and Syrian forces allied with Moslem militias. The only hospital in the area is already seriously overcrowded and an extension is being built to accommodate the large increase in the numbers of refugees requiring treatment.
