- Story Text: The Duchess of Medina-Sidonia was arrested near Palomares in Spain yesterday (Tuesday) as she led a farmers' protest march whose destination was the United States Embassy in Madrid. The petite, 30-year-old duchess - famous as a horsewoman, flamenco dancer and singer, as well as an outspoken advocate of social causes - was detained by the police after refusing to disband the march. The protest was being made on the first anniversary of the loss of four unarmed hydrogen bombs by the United States near Palomares. The bombs were retrieved after a mammoth search and recovery operation.
The duchess planned to march five miles (3.1 kms) to the town of Cuevas de Almanzora, where, with about fifty companions she was to board a bus for Madrid.
The demonstrators demanded that the United States should pay an additional $2,500,000 compensation for the damage said to have resulted from the bomb mishap. So far the US Government has paid out $558,104 for 475 individual claims.
