- Story Text:Singer-songwriter Tom Petty was honored on Friday (February 10) as the 2017 MusiCares person of the year at a star-studded gala in Los Angeles held in conjunction with the annual Grammy Awards, the recording world's most prestigious honors which will be handed out on February 12.
The night featured tribute performances by Grammy award-winning artists Foo Fighters, Norah Jones, Eagles-founder Don Henley and Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac.
"I got to, kind of, know who Tom was very quickly. And I felt that we would be friends forever. And we were," said Nicks on the red carpet. She later performed her duet with Petty 'Insider' from his 1981 album Hard Promises.
Jeff Lynn, founder of the British rock group Electric Light Orchestra, also paid tribute to Petty.
"He's just a very cool guy. He's like the all American boy, I always used to think of him. And I got to know him really well and he's got a great sense of humor. We always get on well and hang out now and again. I just enjoy working with him," he said.
Lynn teamed up with Petty, Bob Dylan, George Harrison and Roy Orbison to form the supergroup The Traveling Wilburys in the late 1980s. He co-wrote Petty's 1989 hit 'I Won't Back Down,' which he performed with him at the show.
"Twenty years ago, I would have been way too cynical to do this but I'm 66 now and I feel you. I thank you for this and it's a great honor," Petty said after receiving his award. He performed six of his hits to standing ovations from the crowd.
Also performing were country-rock singer-songwriter Lucinda Williams, jazz singer Norah Jones and Elle King, who is hoping to take home a Grammy on Sunday for her song with Dierks Bentley 'Different for Girls.'
