- Story Text: Mexico's incoming ambassador to the United States on Tuesday (February 21) spoke out against U.S. President Donald Trump's treatment of its southern neighbour as "unacceptable".
With Trump threatening to rip up the NAFTA trade deal that underpins more than $500-billion in annual bilateral trade between the two neighbours, incoming ambassador Geronimo Gutierrez said the dignity of Mexicans will be of importance in any new deal with Washington.
"I am sure that finding a good relationship with the United States should never be at any cost, never under any conditions, and never to the detriment of national interests and the dignity of Mexicans," he said.
The U.S. government released guidelines on Tuesday (February 21) showing almost all undocumented migrants will be subject to deportation, but protections will be left in place for "dreamers" who entered the country illegally as children.
It comes after Trump on the campaign trail labelled immigrants from Mexico as "rapists" and "criminals".
Gutierrez criticised the US president's treatment of Mexico.
"The treatment received by our country is unacceptable and clearly not favourable."
He added that a respectful relationship with the Trump administration will need to be reciprocated.
"Our partner is with the executive government of the country. President Trump and his government deserve respect from the government in Mexico and they will get it in so far as it's reciprocal," he added.
Geronimo Gutierrez, who will be Mexico's third ambassador to the United States in less than a year, was speaking at a hearing in Mexico's Senate where his post was confirmed by the majority of lawmakers at the sitting.
"I ratify under federal jurisdiction and expedite Citizen Geronimo Gutierrez Fernandez as the Mexican Ambassador to the United States of America," said Marcela Guerra, President of the Foreign Relations Commission for North America.
Gutierrez, who is expected to be ratified by the Mexican Senate this week, held senior posts in the two previous administrations headed by the opposition centre-right National Action Party (PAN). - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
