- Story Text: Pakistani police have seized 11 kilograms (24 pounds) of heroin worth over one million U.S. dollars from a passenger travelling on a local bus, a senior customs official said on Tuesday (February 21).
"There (on the bus), the baggage of a passenger named Naeem was examined. While checking, 11 polythene bags containing heroin, one kilogram in each bag, were recovered. 11 kilogram of heroin is valued at 11 crore rupees ($1.05 million) at international market," Chief Collector of Customs, Zahid Khokhar said at a news conference in Karachi.
Khokhar said that the contraband was seized on Monday (February 20) afternoon at a checkpoint on the outskirts of Karachi by the Pakistani anti-smuggling organisation. The man carrying drugs was travelling from the southwestern city of Quetta to the port city of Karachi.
He said the alleged drug smuggler, the driver and the assistant driver of the bus were arrested but a fourth suspect was at large and efforts were underway to apprehend him.
Pakistan is a major conduit for drugs flowing out of its northern neighbour, Afghanistan, which is the world's largest producer of heroin.
Production has soared to near record levels in Afghanistan since the overthrow of the Taliban late in 2001. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
