- Story Text: Syrians wounded in the Salaheddine district of Aleppo described the fighting as they were recovering in a state hospital in the southern Turkish province of Kilis on Wednesday (August 29).
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, battling a 17-month-old uprising against his family's 42-year rule, has used fighter jets and helicopter gunships to pound rebel strongholds, often in cities. Insurgents in turn have stepped up their own attacks, hitting tanks, military convoys and security buildings.
"We were rushed to the hospital with an ambulance after getting wounded. When we arrived there, while we were getting out of the ambulance, war planes shelled the hospital. My friend died and I was wounded," said a Syrian man who did not want to give his name.
"I was fighting in the Salaheddine neighbourhood. It was under our control but they shelled the city early in the morning and I got wounded," said Abdulkadir, who fought with the Free Syrian Army.
At least 18,000 people have now been killed in Syria since the anti-Assad revolt began. At least 170,000 have fled the country, according to the United Nations, and 2.5 million need aid inside Syria.
Up to 5,000 refugees a day have been crossing into Turkey over the past two weeks and the United Nations warned on Tuesday (August 28) that up to 200,000 people could settle in Turkey if the conflict worsens.
Turkey urged the United Nations on Wednesday to protect displaced Syrians inside their country but President Bashar al-Assad dismissed talk of a buffer zone on Syrian territory. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
