- Story Text: Egypt's National Coalition to Support Legitimacy and Reject the Coup said on Thursday (August 29) that it completely opposed any military intervention in Syria, which it said would result in increased divisions in an already fragile region.
"The Alliance condemns the crimes and the massacres that are carried out against the Syrian people, and its revolution against the ruling regime, with the same force the Alliance condemns any foreign military intervention in Syria, as it will open a wide door for the whole area to be divided, for the interest of the Zionist American alliance, which threatens the Egyptian national security," said member of the National Coalition, Magdy Qurqur, addressing journalists in the Egyptian capital Cairo.
The National Coalition is a group of supporters of former Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi, ousted by the Egyptian military last month.
Mursi, a member of the Sunni Muslim Brotherhood, had cut off diplomatic relations with Syria, led by President Bashar al-Assad, a follower of the Shi'ite's Alawite sect.
Egypt's army-backed administration that replaced Mursi has since tried to distance itself from his position, which analysts say could signal a desire to return to a role as a more neutral broker in the civil war.
During the news conference Qurqur also used the opportunity to call on people to start boycotting news outlets and businesses that supported the military 'coup' against Mursi.
"We call for a boycott this week of the press and state TV channels, and websites that support the coup and that cover up their massacres, and that are inciting hatred, and that spread lies to influence public opinion. Also boycotting businessman who work for companies that fund and support the coup and also international products from countries that also support the coup,'' he said.
The coalition is also activating a 'plan of civil disobedience' where the group is encouraging people not to pay taxes as well as boycotting certain products.
"The youth have started organising campaigns and blacklists which they promote on Facebook and Twitter, and they've also started to take steps for civil disobedience in the face of the coup," he added.
The National Coalition to Support Legitimacy and Reject the Coup, which includes the Brotherhood and demands Mursi's reinstatement, promised protests in the streets and squares of all of Egypt's 27 provinces on Friday (August 30). - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
