- Story Text: The Foreign Ministers of both Egypt and Syria addressed the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday morning (1 October).
Both the Foreign Minister of Egypt, Mr. Ismail Fahmy, and his Syrian counterpart, Mr. Atdul Halim Khaddam, who is also Syria's Deputy Prime Minister, discussed the Middle East situation and Arab oil supplies.
Mr. Fahmy told the assembly that Egypt rejected suggestions that some countries are manipulating basic human needs for the sake of narrow national interests and that the use of oil embargoes would lead to confrontation instead of cooperation.
He said when the Arabs decided to mobilize their oil to serve their battle they did not in reality manipulate the destinies and fates of people.
He stressed the Arabs acted only under provocation and within the limits that would secure them their legitimate rights.
The Syrian Foreign Minister, Mr. Khaddam, told delegates that violations of the commitments on which Israel had been admitted to the world body had made it unfit for membership.
He said that the U.N. should uneqivocally declare that a just Middle East peace is impossible without complete Israeli withdrawal from occupied territories and the reverse of all changes made in that territory.
Mr. Khaddam said if Israel failed to comply it should be deprived of United Nations membership.
