- Story Text: The Prime Minister of Syria, Mr. Mahmoud Al Ayoubi, arrived in Jordan on Monday (16 February) for a three day visit. He was met at Amman airport by his Jordanian opposite number, Mr. Zaid Al-Rafai.
The main purpose of the Syrian Prime Minister's visit was to attend the bi-annual meeting of the Syrian-Jordanian Committee which was set up to discuss and investigate the possibility of co-operation between the two countries.
In June last year the President of Syria, Hafez Al-Assad, made the first visit to Jordan by a Syrian head-of-state for 20 years.
Previously, such an event would have been unthinkable because Jordan has been increasingly isolated from the est of the Arab world -- especially the Syrians.
Two months later, in August 1975, King Hussein of Jordan paid a five-day visit to Syria, following the sighing of agreements between the two countries on military, economic and political co-operation.
The main reason for the two countries drawing closer together was Egypt's apparent willingness to go its own way to reach a unilateral settlement with Israel. That willingness finally culminated in the United States-negotiated accord between Israel and Egypt in Sinal.
Jordan and Syria have also been indirectly involved in the recent civil war in the Lebanon. In January this year King Hussein and President Al-Assad were holding talks on the crisis at the same time as the Syrian Foreign Minister, Abdel-Halim Khaddam was in Beirut negotiating the ceasefire arrangements.
