- Story Text: King Hussein of Jordan accompanied Syrian President Hafez Al-Assad on a tour of the ruined town of Kuneitra on Tuesday (19 August).
The town was devastated during the October 1973 Middle East war. What was once a thriving market community is now just a heap of rubble, with very little remaining intact.
It was an act which last November prompted the United Nations General Assembly to pass a resolution which said Israel's "deliberate destruction of the town of Kuneitra" was a grave breach of the Geneva conventions.
As King Hussein and President Assad inspected the ruins, an Israeli jet burst across the sky at a speed which broke the sound barrier.
Relations between Syria and Jordan have steadily improved since the October war, and the two countries have set up links in military, economic and social fields.
After the inspection tour, the two leaders left for a new round of talks on the Middle East situation, which were likely to cover the proposed diplomatic visit of the United States' Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.
