- Story Text: Israeli settlers have started repairing the damage caused by a Syrian artillery bombardment of the Golan Heights on Thursday night (9 November).
Electricity and postal workers were stringing new wires and cables between two villages which took direct hits in the attack.
The tree-hour bombardment, say the Syrians, was in response to an Israeli raid against Syrian outposts close to where Israel believed Arab guerillas has infiltrated.
Significant damage was done to equipment, housing and livestock during the bombardment. The Israeli airforce claims to have shot down two Mig-21 aircraft and blasted anti-aircraft and artillery emplacements.
The Syrian shelling opened up along a 30 to 40 kilometre (20-30 miles) front. One Israeli soldier died from wounds, and two civilians were injured.
SYNOPSIS: The aftermath of last week's violent clash between Syria and Israel along the ceasefire line of the Golan Heights. Intensive shelling of the Heights by Syria resulted in widespread damage, one soldier dead and two injured civilians.
The Syrians say they were replying to Israeli air raids against Syrian posts close to where Israel believed Arab guerillas had infiltrated. Israeli officials estimated that between two-thousand and three-thousand shells were fired in the attack. Two villages took direct hits.
Significant damage was done to equipment, housing and livestock over a wide front of about twenty to thirty miles. In Ein Zivan, a house took a direct hit, but its occupants had sheltered elsewhere. In the other village which took direct hits, one house was damaged, barns were set on fire, and most windows were broken by the blasts.
The ceasefire line along the Golan Heights is again quiet, but tense.
