  • Story Text: Pope Paul and the Syrian Orthodox Patriarch Ignatius jacob III appealed for peace in the middle-east after an historic meeting in the Vatican yesterday (27 October). It was the first time that a Syrian Patriarch has visited Rome to confer with leaders of the Roman Catholic clergy. The meeting was another important step in the reconciliation between the Roman Catholic and Orthodox Churches. Efforts to end the discord between the churches that date back to the eleventh century, began in 1962 when Pope John convened the Council of the Vatican.

    The two Christian leaders appealed to the heads of state to increase their efforts in achieving lasting peace among nations and removing obstacle which prevented men from enjoying the fruits of justice and religious freedom. The meeting between the two religious leaders came during the last sessions of the Synod of Bishops who are discussion world peace and the question of celibacy of priests.

    SYNOPSIS: It was an historic day in Vatican City as the leader of the Syrian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Ignatius jacob the third of Antioch arrived to confer with Roman Catholic Bishops and Pope Paul. It was the first time the Patriarch has met in Rome with the Catholic Clergy.

    The Pope warmly greeted the leader of some one hundred thousand Orthodox faithful in Syria. The meeting is another important step in the reconciliation of the Roman Catholic and orthodox Churches. The hopes for reconciliation began in 1962 to end the discord between the churches that date all the way back to the eleventh century.

    The meetings between the two religious leaders came during the last sessions of the Synod of Bishops who are discussing the problems of world peace.

    The Pope and the Patriarch issued a statement calling for leaders of the world to increase their efforts in achieving lasting peace among nations. They specifically directed their appeal for peace to nations in the troubled Middle East and called for justice and religious freedom for all.
