- Story Text: Syrian President Hafez al-Assad told a European Union (EU) delegation in Damascus on Saturday (October 28) that Syria was serious about making peace with Israel but the Jewish state was not ready for peace now, his spokesman said.
"Syria has been serious about the peace process since it accepted the U.S. initiative, but it seems that Israel is not ready for peace now," Assad's spokesman, Joubran Kourieh, said.
He told Reuters that Assad's talks with the EU team, led by Spanish Foreign Minister Javier Solana, whose country holds the EU rotating presidency, also covered Syrian-European cooperation.
Kourieh said President Assad expressed support for an effective European role in the peace process.
Discussions also covered the European-Mediterranean conference in Barcelona on November 26-27, Kourieh said.
Syria said earlier it would participate in the conference.
Israel will also take part.
The EU troika delegation, including officials from Italy and France, has visited Egypt, Lebanon and Israel. Italian Foreign Minister, Susanna Agnelli, joined the delegation in Damascus on Friday (October 28).
Syria's peace talks with Israel are stalled over the fate of the Golan Heights, captured by Israel in 1967, as well as future ties and security arrangements.
