- Story Text: A leader of Syria's ruling Baath Party on Monday (7 April) launched a scathing attack on the regime in Iraq, describing its leaders as defeatists.
Rival factions of the Baath party are in power in Syria and Iraq.
The Assistant Secretary General of the Baath party in Syria, Mr. Abdullah Al ahmar, made his attack at a rally in the Damascus Auditorium.
The rally was held to mark the 28th anniversary of the founding of the party.
Mr. Al ahmar said the Baath party was committed to the complete liberation of occupied Arab territory, but accused the Iraqis of being silent over conspiracies being drawn up by Washington and Tel Aviv in the guise of peace terms.
He called on the rulers of Iraq to let the Iraqi army and people exercise genuine democracy.
Among those at the rally was the Syrian President, Hafez al Assad, who earlier had laid the corner stone for a press building in Damascus as part of celebrations for the anniversary.
