- Story Text: Syrian and Israeli tanks were reportedly locked in battle on the Golan Heights on Tuesday (2 April) as fighting between the two armies entered its fourth unbroken week and in the Syrian capital of Damascus crowds are waiting for each new edition of newspapers to hit the streets with news of the fighting. Workers are taking radios to work and familia are staying at home in the evenings to listen for the latest developments on the Golan Heights front.
Tuesday was the 22nd consecutive day of combat between the two sides on the Golan Heights, but there's been no confirmation of Israeli reports that Syria has recently massed additional forces on the border in offensive positions. Syrian leaders claim they are trying to prevent the Israelis from digging in along the 40 mile (65 km) front. Despite the talks scheduled for later this month when leaders of both Syria and Israel go to Washington to seek a separation agreement and eventual peace, more coverage is being given to the fighting in Syrian newspapers. Editorials in other Arab newspapers have praised Syria for carrying on the fight on behalf of all Arab people.
