- Story Text: The leader of Lebanon's powerful right-wing Falangist Party, Pierre Gemayel, made a one day visit to Syria on Saturday (6 December) to discuss the Lebanese crisis with Syria's President Hafez Al-Assad. The talks were held in Damascus.
Their meeting, against a background of a sudden worsening in the situation in Lebanon, is something of a political breakthrough. Reports suggest that observers in the Lebanese capital of Beirut generally regard Syria as sympathising with the elements opposed to the Falangists--the loose alliance of Moslems, left wingers, Arab Nationalists and Palestinian commandos.
On Friday (6 December) President Assad and Mr Gemayel conferred together with their aides for 45 minutes and then met alone. The Falangist leader also conferred with Syria's Foreign Minister Abdel-Halim Khaddam and Interior Minister Ali Zaza during his brief visit.
SYNOPSIS: Leader of the Lebanese Falangist Party, Pierre Gemayel, paid a one day visit to the Syrian capital of Damascus, Saturday, to discuss the worsening situation in Lebanon with Syria's leaders including Foreign Minister Abdel-Halim Khaddam.
The meetings, against a background of worsening conditions in Lebanon, are seen as something of a political breakthrough. Observers in Beirut say that Syria is generally regarded as sympathising with Mr. Gemayel's political opponents.
Mr. Gemayel and Syrian President Hafez Al-Assad conferred together with their aides for forty-five minutes at the Presidential Palace and then met alone.
The Falangist leader was accompanied on his mission by a delegation from the political bureau of the Lebanese Falangists, mainly ministers and members of the Lebanese Parliament.
